While still with Belle and Sebastian, Isobel Campbell released her solo projects under the name of The Gentle Waves. Paul worked on her second solo album, Swan Songs for You, providing string arrangements for three of the tracks. On Isobel's next album, Amorino (released under her own name), Paul arranged and orchestrated tracks with a distinctively 60's feel, influenced by the early music of Nancy Sinatra and the classic Ronnie Hazelhurst arrangements. In keeping with the authentic 60's sound all the parts were recorded at the same time as the band, using a full orchestra. With their friendship firmly cemented, Paul went on to arrange Bel's next release,Time is just the Same, which featured Mark Lanagan from Queens of the Stone Age. This led on to arrangements for Bel and Mark's Mercury-nominated album, Ballad of the Broken Seas. After finishing work on her next album, Milkwhite Sheets, which introduced a more intimate and folky side to Isobel's sound, the two of them went on to collaborate on a track, Wilderness, for Paul's debut album, Filmtales, before going on to record Bel's second album with Mark Lanagan, Sunday at Devil Dirt.
