Envoy has been signed to Scottish label Soma since 1995. He recently changed direction, by adding his vocals to the Detroit-influenced, soulful techno, normally associated with Envoy. On his last long player, Shoulder to Shoulder, composer Craig Armstrong (Love Actually, Moulin Rouge, Quiet American) was asked to write a string arrangement for the title track. Paul, who has worked with Craig on a number of projects, provided the orchestration and finishing touches to the final string arrangement, then headed into the studio for recording. Co-produced with Soma label-mate Ewan Pearson, Shoulder to Shoulder is mellow and deep, but catchy enough to cross over into the mainstream.
